I want to tell you about our urgent effort to put billboards up in Jerusalem, telling leaders to lock in a date for real peace talks. I signed and thought you might want to do so as well! See Avaaz’s email below (they’re serious, there’s more on them at the end).

Over 80,000 of us signed Avaaz’s campaign for Real Middle East Peace Talks, and the diplomatic buzz is growing. We put up member-designed billboards in Jerusalem, and they got national media coverage — then a couple of extremists vandalised the billboards.

This is good news — it shows we’re making a real impact. Let’s put the billboards back up with even more signatures, and put them in Tel Aviv as well as Jerusalem! Can you help grow the campaign to more than 100,000 voices for peace before the end of the week? Click here to sign the petition:

That’ll show the vandals: every time they deface our message we’ll put it back up with more support. Most Israelis and Palestinians say they want proper negotiations: we refuse to be silenced by a small minority. You can see the billboards via the link above. At this moment of upheaval in Middle East politics, these mock travel adverts are challenging and disarming the Israeli public — here’s some of what the Jerusalem Post said:

While enticing Israelis to travel by featuring attractive women and scenery are nothing new, these billboards were created to stop Israelis in their tracks. These ads feature “enemy states” such as Saudi Arabia and Syria in a whole new way, with only the fine print noting that the price is for one room and a double bed - dependent on the Saudi peace plan.

“Israelis visiting Damascus, Dubai, even Jericho is inconceivable today – unless they’re in uniform,” said Hilder. “We wanted to help Israelis look and think again about the Arab Peace Initiative.”

We’ve had a great response to the ads, though Israel’s politicians are still dancing around the idea of real peace talks based on 1967 borders. So don’t let the extremists silence us - spread the word, get us to 100,000 and we’ll put up even more billboards!

Voici un Communiqué de la Société des Journalistes de France 3‎ que je viens de recevoir.
Je pense que c’est encore un bel exemple de la mégalomanie de notre “peut-être-président”…
Les ressemblances avec l’ex-président italien Silvio Berlusconi dans ses relations avec la presse sont effrayante.

Voici le communiqué:

Nicolas Sarkozy se verrait-il déjà à l’Elysée ?

Trépigne-t-il déjà en s’imaginant bientôt disposer des pleins pouvoirs ? Sans doute grisé par les sondages qui le placent en tête du
premier tour, le candidat UMP s’est récemment laissé aller à une petite crise d’autorité dans les locaux de France 3. Une sorte de caprice régalien que l’on croyait appartenir à d’autres temps, ceux de la vénérable ORTF. M. Sarkozy a en effet menacé de « virer » notre direction. Comme ça, sur un coup de tête. Parce qu’elle n’a pas daigné lui dérouler le tapis rouge et accourir immédiatement à sa rencontre lorsqu’il est venu, le 18 mars dernier, participer à l’émission France Europe Express, présentée par Christine Ockrent. A peine arrivé, Monsieur le Ministre-candidat se laisse d’abord aller à quelques grossièretés, estimant que cette émission « l’emmerde » et qu’il n’a pas envie de la faire !
Ensuite, le voici vexé de devoir attendre dans les couloirs de France pour être maquillé, d’autres invités occupant déjà les lieux (et oui, France 3 ne dispose que d’une salle de maquillage).
Coupable de ce « crime de lèse-Sarkozy », voici notre direction sur la sellette.
- « Toute cette direction, il faut la virer », a lâché le candidat UMP, comme le rapporte le Canard Enchaîné du 21 mars 2007.
- « Je ne peux pas le faire maintenant. Mais ils ne perdent rien pour attendre. Ca ne va pas tarder ».

Les Français sont désormais prévenus ! L’une des priorités de Nicolas Sarkozy s’il est élu président de la République sera de couper des têtes à France 3. A la trappe ces directeurs qui tardent à exécuter les courbettes. Le Ministre-candidat avait déjà habitué notre rédaction à ses poses agacées, à ses humeurs dans nos locaux, face à une rédaction qui ne lui
semble manifestement pas suffisamment docile. Comme cette récente provocation gratuite à l’adresse d’un journaliste du service politique
- « ça ne doit pas être facile de me suivre quand on est journaliste de gauche! ».

Désormais, c’est à la direction qu’il veut s’en prendre!

La Société des Journalistes de la Rédaction Nationale de France 3 ne peut qu’être scandalisée par une telle attitude de la part d’un plus haute magistrature de France. Nous nous inquiétons que M. Sarkozy puisse afficher sans aucune gêne un tel mépris pour l’indépendance des chaînes de service public.

Non, monsieur Sarkozy, les journalistes de la Rédaction Nationale de France 3 ne sont pas et ne seront jamais vos valets. Ils
résisteront à toute menace pesant sur leur indépendance. Si nous devons des comptes, ce téléspectateurs, qui regardent chaque jour nos journaux d’information.
Par respect pour eux, pour leur intelligence nous n’accepterons jamais aucune forme de mise sous tutelle politique. Ni de votre part, ni de la part d’aucun autre candidat.

Dimanche je me suis rendu au consulat de France à Madrid pour voter.

J’ai étais extrement surpris en voyant la queue qui c’etait formée devant le consulat. Elle faisait deux fois la rue… Et quand on pensait être arrivé à la fin du supplice (à l’entrée du consulat) ça continuait et ça devenait pire. À l’interieur la file était divisée en quatre, chaque file pour une partie de l’alphabet (a-b, d-h etc.). Je ne sais pas comment ils ont décidé de partager les groupes de lettres mais dans tout les cas ce n’etais pas équilibré. Certaines personnes arrivées plus d’une heure après moi ont pû voter avant moi parce qu’ils avaient un nom de famille commencant par “la bonne lettre”…

J’ai attendu une heure et demi à l’exterieur et un heure à l’interieur (ce qui était pire parce que ça n’avancait tout simplement pas!). Cela donne deux heure et demi d’attente… hônnetement je pensait que cela n’arrivait que dans le tiers monde. Il y à près de 13000 inscrit sur les listes électorales à Madrid. Je pense que ça aurai pû être mieux organisé.

En sortant du consulat la file d’attente c’était encore ranlongée… il était 17h (plus qu’une heure pour voter!)… je ne pense pas que tout le monde qui le souhaitait ai pû voter.

Cela dit je trouvais assez impressionant que personne ne s’est énervé. Tout s’est déroulé dans la patience (il en fallait) et la bonne humeur (en tout cas jusqu’au cape des 2h d’attente )

Tout ce qu’on ne fait pas pour aller voter!

I just red a post on a French Blog called Big Bang Blog. It was talking about how Sarkozy copied the victorious walk of Chirac in 1995…

I totally agree with that. But what kind of surprised me was that they were saying that Sarkozy “killed Le Pen” (”[...] Il a tué Le Pen, c’est vrai [...]“) because before the election Le Pen was screaming around that Sarkozy was going to be the Jospin of 2007, meaning that he wasn’t even going to pass the first round. Finally Le Pen got 4th with a bit more then 10% of the votes. Sarkozy is first with more then 31% of the votes.

Not a big surprise to me. All surveys were forecasting this result. In 2002 surveys forecasted the wrong result (Chirac against Jospin in the second round) but there was only a 4% difference between the poll and the final result. Le Pen wasn’t suddenly going to gain 15% more votes than expected.

What I find weird in all this is that saying that saying that Sarkozy “killed Le Pen” sounds like something great… but it obviously isn’t. Sarkozy only “killed” the old man thanks to the ideas of that same old man! Like a user comment says on the Big Bang Blog you shouldn’t mistake chasing the Nazis with stealing there ideas (”Faut pas confondre chasser les nazis et courrir après leurs idées“)!

I’m happy that Le Pen didn’t go through, no doubt. But I’m extremely scared about what is happening in the country that gave me half of my blood. I don’t understand how so many people get so many strange ideas. From 12 candidates, 3 were not only right, but a bit more then that! And it’s not just any candidates, not the 3 last ones; they came first (Nicolas Sarkozy: 31,11%), fourth (Jean-Mari Le Pen: 10,51%) and sixth (P. De Villiers: 2,24%)! If we add that up we have nearly 44% of the French voters that are dreaming of an authoritarian system…

(If anyone finds that I’m going to far saying that Sarkozy is extreme, I found this article pretty interesting. I don’t agree with all of it, but it’s an interesting view on things; what would people say if Turkey, or why not Germany, decided to create a “Ministry of Immigration and National Identity”? I ask you: Would that scare us or would we find it legitimate?)

I have a French colleague who voted for Sarkozy. He says he’s the only one that can “save France”. And he was talking about security the favorite subject of these people. I know this might seem a bit extreme, but I can’t stop making the comparison to my other half (my German side) and I think people alos though that Hitler was the only one that was able to save German. And also, Hitler did huge changes! Many people got work when he came to power. Probably just like we’ll all feel so much safer when Sorkazy will be president. And he promises to lower the unemployment under the 5% rate within five years.

Isn’t the question to know whether we really agree with the way he’s going to achieve these things? Whether we agree with the kind of society this might make out of us?!?

As a conclusion I’d just like to add a sentence that I read in an interview of the British-Indian writer/philosopher Salman Rushdie in Der Spiegel:

“If there is a choice between absolute safety and freedom, then freedom must always prevail.“

Mi amigo Tomy ha vivido 4 años en Alemania… y 4 años en Frankfurt (Fráncfort del Meno).

Le encanta Frankfurt y hace publicidad para esta ciudad cuando lo puede.

Es un poco raro para un aleman que te digan que Frankfurt es una ciudad tan buena, guapa y divertida porque (aparte del hecho que es mucho mas pequeña de lo que pensaba: solo unos 600.000 habitantes!) toda Alemania habla mal de esta ciudad: es la marca del capitalismo… bancos, bancos, bancos. Asi que os podeis imaginar como uno se divierte con empleados de banco…

Basicamente, Frankfurt, no le interesa a nadie, excepto a los que trabajan en finanzas o que tienen la mala suerte de haber nacido alli

Sin embargo justamente este sabado Tomy escribio un post hablando del ranking anual de ciudades con la mejor calidad para vivir/calidad de vida. Y es increible pero verdad: ellos concideran Frankfurt como la 5ta mejor ciudad para vivir EN EL MUNDO…

No sé que decir… honestamente creo que es un poco ridiculo. Hay ciudades muy bonitas en este mundo, y no solo en Alemania…

Pero bueno, lo divertido es que hoy salio un articulo en el periodico alemán Spiegel Online hablando de cuanto es agradable vivir en Frankfurt… El titulo del articulo (traducido) da algo así: Frankfurt es la ciudad mas peligrosa de Alemania. La dpa (deutsche presse agentur) es la agencia nacional de prensa. Ellos hicieron esta encuesta, asi que me parece una fuente bastante solvente.

… Nada mas que decir, 5ta mejor calidad de vida en el mundo, primera en criminalidad en Alemania… para mi esto es una contradiccion.

Yo os aconsejo de ir a ver la segunda ciudad alemana en numero de habitante, el segundo puerto europeo, con el puesto 24 hablando de la calidad de la vida (en el mundo) y solo sexta en criminalidad (en Alemania)…
